Why Be Baptist?
From Donna Hopkins Britt:
Contrary to public opinion, to me, being Baptist is about minimizing human contributions to religion and letting God’s Spirit work in each person as he/she prayerfully feels led. The Baptist History and Heritage Society has a very informative web site, in case you’re curious click here. You also can find out more about the alliances Calvary supports on this web site by clicking here. I have some pamphlets in my office which you may borrow as well.
The Baptist World Alliance is a fellowship of 214 Baptist conventions and unions comprising a membership of more than 37 million baptized believers and a community of 105 million. Its Mission Statement is “Networking the Baptist family to impact the world for Christ.” “Baptist World” magazine, the quarterly publication of the Baptist World Alliance, is now online. You can find news from around the world at bwanet.org, including information on Baptists’ 400th birthday. DHB
It's All About Missions
Powell River Mission Team Report
Your Mission Team's trip to the Appalachian coal fields this year was blessed in many ways, but especially because four of our Sioux Indian friends from the Standing Rock Reservation in South Dakota drove to Virginia to work alongside the Roanoke Valley Baptist team.
STANDING ROCK, NORTH/SOUTH DAKOTA (July 25-Aug. 1) Reservations will be made April 6 for flights and hotels. The Mission Committee has put together an application and packet of information (including about scholarships), which you may pick up in the church office or receive by email (contact the church office if you’d like it sent to you).
If you intend to go with the group from Calvary, here are the deadlines:
June 30, $100 to pay for food during the week You will make your own reservations for the hotel near our site at an approximate cost of $50/room/night. The only other costs would be food in transit and souvenirs.
Talk with Evelyn Lewis, Sandra Overstreet, or Pastor Britt for more information.
For other mission trip opportunities with the Virginia Baptist Mission Board, click here. You’ll find construction projects in the Caribbean, South Africa and even the Roanoke Valley; you can do children’s ministry in Belize or Germany; you can organize a church library in Trinidad; you can teach English and games to children of migrant workers in China; and much more!

Donna Hopkins Britt
Downtown Congregations In Action (CIA) focus on helping Highland Park Elementary School, and more. During June, they are studying together Abraham: A Journey to the Heart of Three Faiths, and have invited Calvary’s participation (see below). Jewish author Bruce Feiler researches the Christian, Muslim, and Jewish versions of our common father Abraham, his call, his children, the three religions, and his legacy.
Feiler talked with Irish Catholic priest John Lyons.
“The lesson of Abraham,” Father John explained…, “is you have to be willing to risk it all. You have to give up everything for God. Even in the New Testament, Jesus says unless you are willing to give up husband, wife, mother, father, and children, for the Kingdom of God, you are not worthy to follow me. The bottom line is if you’re too comfortable, or too secure, to too into having control, then you won’t be willing to trust God.
“And the Bible says, ‘I want you to have total trust in me, Abraham.’ You’re not going to know where your next meal is coming from. You’re not going to know where your next home is. If you’re going to be in covenant with me, you have to trust me with every cell in your body. And if you do that, I will bless you” (New York: William Morrow, 2002, p. 48-49).
The guy working out at the YMCA said, “I thought this was supposed to get easier, but it’s getting harder!” Faith, too, is hard; yet as we invest more in our relationship with God (as with people), the rewards get better as well. Enjoying the journey with you,.
